If you are looking for an introduction to 3D (stumpwork) flower embroidery then this little book could be just what you need. Inspirational Embroidery: Stumpwork Flower Embroidery, by Jill Kipnis, takes you through the process from design to completion. Her aim is to help you develop sound skills by focusing on one technique and using a project-based approach.

After a short introduction and description of the materials used, Jill outlines her personal design process. Recognising that many of us are not confident artists, she provides helpful suggestions for creating the flower shapes and templates (at the back of the book) for the terrified! The main part of the book is the step-by-step instructions for creating and finishing the clematis flower and leaves. These pages are lavishly illustrated with clear photographs and helpful tips and tricks. The stitch techniques section features good, easy to follow line drawings. If making the clematis flower has left you wanting to do more, there is a lovely little succulent plant project, using similar techniques, that I can’t wait to get started on.

This is a slim volume, just 30 pages each measuring 20x20cm, but it is clear, concise and to the point. If you are interested in trying stumpwork then this book would be the ideal introduction.
